The Office of Public Outreach (OPO) at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a world-class leader in astronomy communication, education and public outreach. We conduct communications and public outreach activities for NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Our efforts focus on meeting the needs of the general public and science communicators by connecting to three user communities: news media, online audiences, and venues offering in-person interactions. In addition, OPO includes a broad set of skills, from visualization and imaging specialists, designers, and science writers, to education specialists and outreach scientists, to provide current and tailored products and services. At the same time, we leverage our assets and expertise and work with external partners in collaborative ways to achieve maximum synergy, efficiency, and reach. We are also the lead institution for NASA’s Universe of Learning, a unique NASA-funded partnership between STScI, the Chandra X-ray Center, Caltech/IPAC Communications and Education, Jet Propulsion Laboratory Exoplanet Exploration Program, and Sonoma State University. Through this partnership, we will build on decades of experience to develop STEM education products, programs, and professional learning experiences that use NASA’s Astrophysics science, technology, and subject-matter experts to advance science education and scientific literacy. Across our branches, all of our efforts emphasize leading our audience to an understanding of the bigger astronomical picture. Our programs share resources and staff to achieve maximum efficiency and ensure that good ideas, exemplary practices, and healthy innovation permeate OPO.
